Civil Court Reforms

In 2007 the Court implemented reforms to the procedure followed in certain Small Claims cases at the Vancouver Robson Square and Richmond courthouses. There, Small Claims cases are tracked into one of three streams:

  • claims from $5,001 to $10,000 (other than personal injury and institutional debt) are scheduled for simplified trials conducted by senior lawyers appointed as Justice of the Peace Adjudicators.
  • at Robson Square, all institutional debt cases are scheduled for a 30-minute summary trial because these cases generally do not need more court time.
  • other matters are scheduled for mediation or judicial settlement conference, followed by trial by a judge if necessary.
